Switzerland Adventures for Hogs Back District Guides

Switzerland trip May 2019.jpg

I have now been going on Switzerland trips since I was first a Leader with Madeleine Nicholas at 1st Rydes Hill Guides in the same District. This was my 7th trip and I decided it was time I got my Going Away With International Licence to continue the tradition.

I was very lucky to have an experienced Leadership Team with me for the 2019 trip. Mad, Helen, Maureen and Becky have all been on the team before and this year we welcomed Lee, Claire and Jess to the team.

8 Leaders took 25 Guides and 2 Rangers to Adelboden, Switzerland during May half term. We booked independently as we had experience with coach companies and the Chalet company in Adelboden. Meals on wheels from a local hotel was also a welcome break from cooking an evening meal on days when we had a long day out.

We had a full itinerary that enjoyed the mountain experiences of Switzerland. Our first day out was a 15 minute walk to “Our Chalet” for a day of activities and back again in the evening for campfire.

During the week we went on a cable car at Kandersteg to Oeschinensee Lake and for fun toboganning. The girls all agreed this was an exciting activity. An early morning get up for the funicular Railway to the Niesen for buffet breakfast on the mountain top and a snowball fight.

One of my Guides had waited a year to make her Promise at the top of the mountain that day, how special. There were awards made for Baden Powell, Camp Permits and Promise ceremonies too on this special trip. A trip to the Woodcarver is a must every year, and this year they made the walk back to Adelboden in record time. We were lucky the cable car was open in Adelboden so we were able to view “Our Chalet” from the other side of the valley. There was also a shopping trip and the Trümmelbach Falls and paddling in a mountain stream.

We had a great trip and the girls had a fantastic time. Thank you to my amazing team for your support and making lots of memories for the girls.

When I met Mad at a volunteer stand in Queen Elizabeth Park Guildford - little did I know what I was letting myself in for all those years ago, but I am very glad we met.
